From the Bedside Sign to the Precise Diagnosis - Across Every Age from Fetal Life to Adolescence
Built for the neuroradiology trainee and pediatric radiologist who must place a scan against a child's exact developmental stage before calling it normal or calling it disease, this reference works from developmental neuroanatomy - fetal life through adolescence - into the full range of pediatric neurologic disease: congenital malformation, perinatal injury, tumor, infection, inflammatory disease, metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders, cerebrovascular disease, and trauma. The Clinical-Imaging Crosswalk System threads every chapter with decision anchors and trap-logic callouts, then consolidates all twenty-seven into a single dual-indexed atlas built for the workstation and the call room.
From the Scan to the Diagnosis, You Will
Distinguish maturation from pathology - myelination, perivascular spaces, and pubertal sinus change read against exact corrected age, not a generic adult expectation.
Apply validated imaging-ordering rules - for headache, seizure, and trauma, separating the child who needs a scan from the child who does not.
Read neonatal brain injury with confidence - hypoxic-ischemic staging and prematurity-related white matter injury, including the diffusion window that hides true injury extent.
Characterize congenital malformation precisely - cortical dysplasia, Chiari, spinal dysraphism, and the slit-ventricle patterns that make shunt-malfunction imaging deceptive.
Work up epilepsy and brain tumor cases - postprocessing-guided lesion localization, suprasellar tumor-marker correlation, and the posterior fossa syndrome easily mistaken for a new complication.
Recognize neurocutaneous, infectious, and autoimmune disease - tuberous sclerosis surveillance and herpes simplex encephalitis before conventional imaging turns positive.
Navigate metabolic and cerebrovascular disease - pattern-based leukodystrophy differentials, moyamoya staging, and the stroke-like lesion that never respects a vascular territory.
Evaluate trauma to the full multidisciplinary standard - SCIWORA and the abusive head trauma constellation read alongside skeletal survey and ophthalmologic findings.
Open it before the next study - the diagnosis a child's development depends on, read correctly the first time.
