SUPERANNO This book quickly shows the author's development from faithful Catholic priest to atheist psychologist who continues teaching The Golden Rule. Then the author discusses why most people believe in God and how superstitious religions divide society. Nevertheless readers are urged to be patient with all in our pluralistic society, since everyone unlearns childhood superstitions at his/her own insightful pace. Readers get ammunition to face "the biggest elephant in the room" in today's sectarian world.
About the Author: Dr. Uhl was born sixth in a Catholic family of nine on a poor farm in Sounthern Indiana. From his mother's knee he got his vocation to the priesthood, as he got his other supernatural beliefs. As a naive young priest, Father Stephen Uhl believed and preached the standard Catholic beliefs and traditions for almost ten years after his ordination. Then, following much study, meditation, and a near fatal auto accideent, he realized he had become a sincere agnostic about the old supernatural "truths" learned in his pre-rational youth. On leaving the Benedictine monastery and priesthood, he earned his Ph.D. in psychology. His private practice thrived as he enjoyed helping his clients shuck their old guilts and fears--as he taught them to drop their harmful habits and outdated superstitions. After retirement, Dr. Uhl discovered his prostate cancer. This motivated the beginnings of a long, intimate letter addressed to his many nieces and nephews to help them unlearn some of the "truths" he had preached as a young priest. On learning that the cancer was evidently under control, that intimate letter developed into the book, Imagine No Superstition, to help everyone see how tremendous this natural world really is, how to enjoy it most deeply, and how to make it even better since it is the only one we get; it is not a rehearsal for some imaginary world in the superstitious beyond.
