Synopsis:

In life, and especially in death, Thomas Becket was nothing short of a medieval celebrity, whose significance spanned the European high Middle Ages in to the sixteenth-century. The essays contained in this volume explore Becket imagery in traditional media, such as stained glass and illuminated manuscripts, but also in less common objects such as toys and baptismal fonts, providing new interpretations and expanding the visual canon into broader geographical and temporal contexts. The contributions examining the appropriation and use of Becket imagery after the English Reformation break new ground by focusing on the visual and material culture rather than texts.
