Item description from seller

28 x 21,5 cm. 18 pp. *First edition of the first composition created by a computer, a landmark document in the history of music and computer science. The "New Music Editions" series was originally founded in New York by the legendary avant-garde composer Henry Cowell to publish radical, new forms of music. The fact that this computer experiment-which was completely bizarre at the time-was immediately printed there in 1957 marked a milestone in the history of music. - The few surviving copies of the first edition are found almost exclusively in university archives and music libraries, which is why they rarely appear on the open market. Arthur Lejaren Hiller Lejaren Arthur Hiller Jr. (born February 23, 1924, in New York City; died January 26, 1994, in Buffalo) was an American composer, music theorist, and chemist. He is considered a pioneer of computer-generated and algorithmic music. Beginning in 1952, he taught at the University of Illinois (transferring from the chemistry department to the music department in 1958) and founded the Experimental Music Studio (EMS) there. From 1968 to 1989, he was a professor of composition at the University at Buffalo. - Small discolored spot on the upper front cover; otherwise in very good condition.
