- Book 2 of 3: Identity Systems
The mechanisms now associated with branding—recognizable symbols, repeated narratives, shared rituals, group loyalty, trust, aspiration, and cultural belonging—existed long before modern companies learned to use them commercially.
Identity Systems: Branding, Positioning, and Market Influence examines how businesses transformed these older social mechanisms into systems capable of producing recognition, market authority, customer loyalty, and long-term competitive advantage.
The book begins before modern branding and follows the emergence of commercial identity through industrialization, mass production, distribution, media, and global markets. It analyzes Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Apple, Microsoft, LEGO, Disney, Nike, luxury houses, Diesel, Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, IKEA, Amazon, and digital platform ecosystems.
These companies are not presented as conventional success stories. Each case isolates a different structural mechanism: global symbolism, standardized trust, simplicity, infrastructural dependency, educational play, narrative ownership, achievement, luxury, rebellion, desire, engineering prestige, accessible design, convenience, community, and platform power.
The book moves beyond logos, campaigns, and visual identity. It examines why some brands become cultural institutions, why people use brands to communicate status and belonging, how positioning excludes as much as it attracts, and how commercial identity can influence expectations far beyond the direct purchase of a product.
This book is written for a wide professional and academic audience: founders, CEOs, business owners, brand strategists, marketers, advertising professionals, creative directors, art directors, designers, product managers, consultants, communication specialists, consumer researchers, sociologists, educators, students, and readers interested in how markets manufacture recognition and trust.
It is relevant both to practitioners working with brands and to readers seeking a deeper structural understanding of why brands acquire social and cultural power.
This is the second volume of the Identity Systems trilogy. It applies the mechanisms established in Identity Systems: Society, Culture, and Social Structures to companies and markets, then prepares the transition to Identity Systems: Personal Brands, Influence, and Thought Leadership, where the same inquiry reaches the individual.
The book also intersects with the Advertising as Power series, which examines the historical machinery of persuasion; The Systems That Built the Digital World, which maps the infrastructures behind modern markets and platforms; and Social Networks: Systems of Influence, which explores the environments through which contemporary brands, messages, and identities now circulate.
