They say that necessity is the mother of invention. This is true in businesses as we look for things people need to inspire us to create. But it is also true that we need to seek opportunities, we need to be looking for places where our organization can fit into the world and where we can make things better within and outside our organization.
In this competency-based workbook you will learn how to actively look for opportunities within your organization for improvement. You will learn to assess the current state of your business, find ways to improve safety, supervise more effectively, and more.
What actions you can take to improve daily operations in your organization and to continually improve yourself? Successful leaders learn to view problems as opportunities, to continuously look for ways to make things better, and to apply what they learn for the purpose of promoting excellence in their organizations. After completing this workbook, you will be able to:
- Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in your work unit.
- Identify opportunities for improving safety and processes in your work unit.
- Appraise the benefits and costs associated with safety and process improvement opportunities and initiatives.
- Create improvement initiative action plans and budgets for discussion and consideration.
- Understand your role in supervising selected project initiatives.
- Create an Environment to Solicit Ideas and Suggestions
- Identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT)

Competencies are sets of skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that are observable and measurable. Our model has 35 competency dimensions associated with successful performance in leadership and professional roles. Competencies are clustered into five domains that may overlap.
This Identifying and Implementing Opportunities for Improvement workbook focuses on the competency areas of Conceptual Thinking Skills, Problem Solving, and Resource Management. The content is primarily associated with the Supervisory/Management competency cluster or domain. For more information or visit: www.centrestar.com
