Author: Svensson, Lars Publisher: Stockholm: Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet (The Swedish Museum of Natural History), 1970 Edition: First Edition Binding: Softcover Description: SVENSSON, LARS. Identification Guide to European Passerines. Stockholm: Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet (The Swedish Museum of Natural History), 1970. First edition of Lars Svensson's influential field identification guide to European passerines. 152 pp. Approx. 18 × 10 cm. Illustrated throughout with numerous line drawings, diagrams and identification details. Text in English. A compact field manual designed for practical use by ornithologists and bird ringers. The book provides detailed methods and characters for the identification, ageing and sexing of European passerines. Introductory sections cover numbering of remiges, wing formulae, measurements, colour terminology and general techniques for ageing and sexing birds, including juvenile plumage, tail-feather shape, moult and wear, growth bars, skull ossification, incubation patch and size differences. The main systematic section gives species-by-species identification characters, measurements, plumage details and diagrams, followed by references and an index of scientific names. Published and sold by Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet (The Swedish Museum of Natural History). Printed in Sweden by K L Beckmans Tryckeri, Stockholm, 1970. The small, narrow format was particularly suitable for carrying and consulting in the field. An attractive example of the original 1970 edition of a field guide that subsequently appeared in several revised and expanded editions and became closely associated with European bird ringing and passerine identification. Condition: Very Good to Near Fine. A very well-preserved copy with only minimal signs of handling and light minor wear to the covers. Internally clean and fresh. Binding sound. Please see photographs for exact condition.
