About this Item
Three separate collections of poems, as listed, by the same author and signed on the front cover dedicated to "Stuart [or "Stu'"] & wife", dated Dec. 1935 on the second. All three pamphlets are 89vo, around 125 x 205mm, the first printed on slightly blue-grey laid paper, the other two on cream wove and respectively pp [16], [16] and [32], self-covered. No publisher details are given, though the first and last item shows the printers as Mead & Son of Sandy, Beds., and the pamphlets are presumably self-published by the author, duly dated June 1935, 1935, and June 1936. The first title has tipped in a real photograph of a baby a few months old and the third a toddle approaching two, presumably the "Ian Christopher" of the poems. It's unclear who the author is but for anyone interested in pursuing the matter further here's some internal evidence: a tipped-in visiting card gives the author's name and a Wandsworth address of 3 Birchlands Avenue; the author's wife's name appears to be Lan; it seems highly probable that "Ian Christopher" is their first child/son and was born in September 1934; in or just before June 1935 IC's double maternal great-grandmother was 79, apparently very lively and with an 80 year old husband, both of them living in Leigh; IC's maternal grandmother's name was Cole and his second cousin was the Conservative MP Tom Howard, nephew of this same grandmother; his godparents were John Bax and Grandpa Brown, one or other apparently living in Balham; his teddy bear is on loan from one David Bone; an uncle, presumably the author's rather than Ian Cristopher's, is (medical) Dr F E Rogers (denoted "poet"). The poems themselves are light verse, not particularly profound or obscure but competently and well written and often amusing rather than being mawkish drivel as might well have been the case. They're clearly celebrating the coming and developing of a young family and of course none the worse for that.
