THE INVISIBLE MAN was the fourth horror character introduced by Universal during the Golden Age of Hollywood. Initially meant to follow the financially successful DRACULA in 1931, it took 21 months before the pre-production dust had settled and principal shooting began. Even after the studio had secured the rights to the 1897 novel of the same name from author H. G. Wells, production head Carl Laemmle Jr. sifted through a dozen screenplays, seven potential lead actors, and four directors before landing on the right combination. Fortunately, it was worth the wait.
Given a gratifying script by R. C. Sherriff that pays homage to Well’s central themes, brilliant direction from James Whale, and an electrifying vocal and physical performance from Claude Rains, THE INVISIBLE MAN is a beautifully woven tapestry of horror, drama, romance, and comedy, all rolled into a single ball of wonderment. Behind the scenes, the film is the result of the rich artistry of Charles D. Hall’s sets, John P. Fulton’s groundbreaking special effects, Arthur Edeson’s intense cinematography, and the vision of makeup artist Jack P. Pierce and costumer Vera West who, collectively, created a nightmarish character from a simple ensemble of goggles, bandages, and outerwear . . . all of which have remained effective into the 21st century.
The book begins with a condensed biography of British author and social commentator H. G. Wells, and the events that led to one of his most famous sci-fi manuscripts. This is succeeded by Wells’ complete, unaltered 1897 novel, “The Invisible Man”. We then follow Wells and Universal Pictures as they enter into an adaptation contract in September 1931, as well as the pre-production difficulties that ensued. With a screenplay, director, cast, and technical crew finally selected by June of 1933, the book then offers an in-depth description of the complete shooting schedule from in front of and behind the camera, including an analysis of the ground-breaking special effects. This is followed by the film’s pre-release promotions, the World Premier, and a pictorial storyline offering of the complete script. The book then dives into the film’s financial and critical reception, post-release profiles of the cast and crew, and the sequels and remakes that followed, both by Universal and other studios, into modern times.
The definitive legacy of THE INVISIBLE MAN has left a lasting mark on the horror genre and popular culture, influencing everything from special effects to the portrayal of complex villainous characters. Its innovative use of cinematic techniques, combined with Claude Rains exceptional performance, and James Whale’s underlying themes of science, power, and humanity, keeps it relevant even today. As scientist Jack Griffin himself proclaimed, “I failed. I meddled in things that man must leave alone.” Quite the contrary can be said for those responsible for Hollywood’s Golden Age adaptation of H. G. Wells’ THE INVISIBLE MAN.
