70p. A small hardcover book bound in beige cloth. Good condition overall. This copy is bound upside-down. Corners and head of spine are lightly worn; tips of corners also bent. Speckly stains on cloth, plus a light, semicircular stain on the front cover. Hinges have been reinforced with transparent, acid-free archival tape, so the binding is tight. The pages are tanned and slightly brittle. Early owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Light foxing and occasional small blemishes in the margins, but otherwise, text itself unmarked. Captivity narrative of Matthew Brayton of Ohio, who was kidnapped as a child by Native Americans and grew up among several tribes, being traded further and further west as time went on. He lived among the Potawatomi, Chippewa, Sioux, and Snake peoples before finally rejoining white civilization and serving in the Civil War. This account is largely regarded by scholars as authentic; it was first published in 1860 (offered here is the scarcer second edition). See Howes B736. Measures approx. 6" x 4.5".…
