Brown paper covers rubbed with some slight scuffing at edges; mild soiling to rear cover; light color fading to spine and adjacent area of front cover. Non-authorial Christmas 1980 ink gift inscription on half-title page. Interior pages are otherwise bright and clean. Binding is firm. A very good copy. With Preface, Introduction, period b/w photographs reproduced throughout within two sections titled "The Economic Setting" (pages 17-121) and "The Social Setting" (pages 123-213), Bibliographic Essay, and Index of Photographic Collections. Features wonderful b/w images by numerous photographers, both known and unknown, documenting the life and labor of white and black Alabamans beginning in the Reconstruction era and concluding towards the end of World War I.
