Print on Demand. This book investigates the stability of toroidal gas discharges using an energy principle. The author begins by referencing cylindrical gas discharges and considers the influence of curvature on toroidal stability. It is found that the pinch can be stabilized under certain restricted conditions, but a thin torus will always be unstable. The author's method of computation and results are included, along with a bibliography for further reading. This book will be of interest to researchers and students in the field of plasma physics and fusion energy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

We assume that the plasma, regarded as an ideal, compressible, perfectly conducting fluid, has the shape of a torus and is surrounded by a conductor, as indicated in Figure 1. In the equilibrium configuration, the pressures and density inside the plasma are taken to be constant; it is assumed that there are no electric currents flowing except on the surface of the plasma.
