Portraitiste attitré de Louis XIV et du jeune Louis XV, Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743) fut aussi le plus célèbre et le plus couru de son temps. Les cours royales, les aristocrates et les grands bourgeois se disputaient ce maître de la représentation du faste et du costume d'apparat qui savait aussi se faire plus tendre dans les portraits de ses proches et ses tableaux d'histoire. Ce catalogue est la première somme parue depuis un siècle, concernant l'oeuvre de cet artiste prolifique. Somme non seulement par le rigoureux travail de dépouillement scientifique des sources et l'examen direct des oeuvres, mais aussi par les très nombreuses identifications nouvelles et les découvertes qu'il nous offre.
