For thirty-two years, Mike Carter and Tom Johnson keep one promise: one hunt every year.
They meet as mismatched roommates at the University of Tennessee, brought together by venison sausage, hunting stories, and the kind of teasing that makes friendship easy. As careers, deployments, marriages, children, and aging parents pull them in different directions, the annual hunt becomes a measure of their lives—and, for Mike, a place to escape the conversations waiting at home.
In 2024, they finally reach Alaska’s Brooks Range for the caribou hunt they have planned for decades. They take two bulls. Then the first extraction flight fails to return, leaving Mike alone beside a remote river as weather closes the valley. Rescuers know his location but cannot reach him. When a bear destroys his shelter, the careful man who has always believed every problem can be solved must face what preparation cannot control.
The fight that follows tests his judgment and endurance, forcing him to confront what friendship asks, what family has already paid, and whether coming home can mean more than staying alive.
One Hunt a Year is a quiet, clear-eyed novel about marriage, fatherhood, faith, grief, and the difficult work of changing while there is still time.
