'In 1920, Clements offered his collection to the University of Michigan, along with $175,000 (plus $15,000 for furnishings and equipment) to build a suitable home for it. Noted Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869-1942) designed the Clements Library in the Italian Renaissance style, based on Vignola's casino for the Villa Farnese, ca.1587, in Caprarola, Italy. In Kahn's plan, the casino, a one-story building, was enlarged to two stories, the roof flattened, the windows lengthened, and an elegant triple-arched entrance created. Finally, Kahn further ornamented the limestone exterior with relief sculpture and inlaid marble, the whole resulting in a building of extraordinary beauty and architectural coherence. As his personal fortune grew, Clements cultivated a passion for history and rare books, concentrating on Americana, particularly books written contemporaneously with the events they describethe primary sources for early American history.concentrating on two periods of American historythe discovery, exploration, and colonization of America by Europeans from the 15th through the 17th centuries, and late 18th century colonial and revolutionary America.opened in 1923 with the gift of Clements' extraordinary Americana collection ~~ 20,000 volumes of rare books, 2,000 volumes of early newspapers, several hundred maps, and the papers of Lord Shelburne, the British Prime Minister who negotiated the peace ending the Revolutionary War'. Illustrated with 100+ b/w facsimiles of the precious items in this wonderful archive. A truly beautiful and singular building in the center of U Michigan Ann Arbor main campus.
