Publication: London, Frank Hollings, 1914 Formatting: 12mo, pp. 72. Condition Report: Good. The original dark green cloth binding remains structurally sound and remarkably tight for its age, featuring strong hinges and unrubbed corners. The white typographic tooling and the decorative chess-piece border on the upper board remain bright and unoxidised. However, the front board exhibits several conspicuous circular moisture rings or cup stains near the lower edge, which strictly dictates the grade. The textblock is square and crisp, featuring light, even age-toning to the margins and fore-edges, but it remains completely free from foxing, interior wear, or marginalia. Catalogue Note: This 'New Edition' of E. A. Greig's highly regarded chess manual was issued from the prominent High Holborn address of its publisher, a renowned name in early 20th-century chess literature. Interestingly, the binding features a variant abbreviated title on the front board, printing Pitfalls on the Chess Board, whilst retaining the full title on the title page. Revised by M. W. Stevens, A. R. C. Sc., this specific issue features significant internal updates from its predecessor. As detailed in the prefatory text, the layout was completely overhauled to accommodate larger, clearer illustrative diagrams, and the variations were streamlined into a more convenient alphabetical arrangement by opening. Copies of these early instructional works, particularly those retaining their original cloth and early cover pricing ("Price 1/- Net"), remain a desirable find on the open market for collectors of vintage board game strategy. A must-have for the historical chess enthusiast, E. A. Greig’s One Hundred Pitfalls on the Chessboard is a strategic compendium designed to arm players against the most common and devastating traps of the game. Originally published to great acclaim, this revised edition presents classic chess openings and their associated pitfalls in a highly accessible alphabetical format. Enhanced with clear, enlarged diagrams, it serves both as a fascinating artefact of early 20th-century chess pedagogy and a timeless reminder that in chess, one must always look two steps ahead. Perfect for the collector's shelf or the active player's study desk.…
