Paperback. Friendship makes life worth living, and worth ending too.Eufrasia Vela is a caregiver its not just her job. But when she begins working with Dona Carmen, a bedridden elderly woman who spends her days staring out the window at her now-obstructed view of the sea, she confronts the limits to her ability to help. That is, until Dona Carmen makes a big, last request: to transform her caretaking from helping her stay alive to helping her die. A good death has much in common with a good life, after all, and incapacity, loneliness, and isolation are devastations that a compassionate friend can help ease. Dignity, community, respect, and generosity theyre what Eufrasia offers her clients, and what their friendship offers her. Winner of the Alfaguara Prize
Translated by International Booker Prize-winning translator Daniel Hahn
"A surprisingly life-affirming read." — Financial Times
Friendship makes life worth living. And worth ending, too.
Eufrasia Vela is a caregiver by nature as much as by profession. But when she begins caring for Doña Carmen, a bedridden elderly woman mourning both her independence and her lost view of the sea, their relationship slowly deepens into something unexpected.
Then Doña Carmen makes one final request.
Warm, funny and quietly devastating, One Hundred Guinea Pigs is a novel about loneliness, dignity, friendship and what it truly means to care for another person. Rich with ethical questions and unforgettable characters, it is the kind of novel that sparks conversation and lingers long after the final page.
"Warm-hearted, moving and crafted with skill and humour." — Claudia Piñeiro
