Hummer & The Boy is a beautifully illustrated story about friendship, devotion, love, and the bonds that remain with us throughout our lives.
When a young boy named Emmett encounters a solitary migratory Canada goose along the lakeshore near his home, he feels an immediate connection to the unusual bird. Naming him Hummer, Emmett returns to the lake again and again, and over the years, a remarkable friendship takes root. As seasons pass and Hummer faithfully returns, the goose becomes a steady presence through childhood, adolescence, and the many changes that accompany growing up.
Amid moments of wonder, joy, disappointment, uncertainty, and hope, Emmett learns what it means to care deeply for another living being. Guided by the wisdom of his mother, he gradually discovers lessons about compassion, devotion, forgiveness, and the enduring nature of Love.
Tenderly told in words and pictures, Hummer & The Boy is a moving read-aloud experience for children and the adults who share stories with them. While young readers will be drawn to the remarkable friendship between a boy and a goose, older readers will recognize a deeper story about attachment, goodbye, remembrance, and the ways love continues long after someone-or something-we cherish is no longer beside us.
Written for both children and adults, Hummer & The Boy reveals new layers of meaning as readers grow in their understanding and return to its pages. It invites conversations about friendship, loyalty, growing up, change, loss, healing, and hope, while allowing each reader to discover the story in their own way and in their own time.
Whether discovered in childhood, shared aloud at bedtime, revisited years later, or given as a gift to welcome a new baby or comfort a grieving friend, this timeless story is destined to be shared, cherished, and passed from one generation to the next.
