“The Humanitarian Gene” explores the inherited values of humanitarianism, social consciousness, and the importance of education that appear and reappear in succeeding generations of two New York and New England families that joined at Oberlin College in the 1890’s. Reverend Ernest C. Partridge (Andover Theological Seminary 1898) and two sisters, Winona and Mary Graffam, graduated from Oberlin College and embarked on lifetime endeavors as educational missionaries with the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions at the beginning of the 20^th Century. These three individuals dedicated their lives to the Armenian people of Sivas (Sebastia), Turkey.

The personal writings of father and son, Ernest and Edward, and the sisters, Winona Graffam Partridge and Mary L. Graffam, span the years 1891 to 1922 and are presented in “The Humanitarian Gene.” Ernest focuses on his national and worldwide efforts to assist the Armenian people after the First World War including his work with the Near East Relief. The diary of pre-teen Edward shares the family, missionary, and community life in the 18 months prior to the deportation of Armenians from Sivas.

Winona’s college letters display her youthful exuberance, interest in clothes, and a missionary ambition that sent her to Macon, Georgia with the American Missionary Association. Her later diaries chronicle her dedication to her family and community while her husband fulfilled their humanitarian goals around the world. Winona’s diaries provide insight into the cultural and societal changes of the World War I period (washing machines, telephone, automobiles, movies) and hold appeal to those interested in the Oberlin Community and Oberlin College events, fellow missionary families, and beloved Armenian friends.

"The Humanitarian Gene: Letters and Diaries by Ernest C. Partridge, Winona G. Partridge, Mary L. Graffam, and Edward G. Partridge 1891-1922" is a work that deserves careful reading, even study, by anyone who believes in going the extra mile so far as data-mining from archival sources is concerned. The detailed indexing helps ease that task by the way. Ms. Partridge's idea of a 'humanitarian gene' that runs in the family is more than a notion. Reading of the pages in sequence brings the concept of 'born to serve' out vividly. These were strong people with strong personalities and strong convictions and a lot of faith. Her book is a welcome addition to the increasing body of publications dealing with missionary families in Turkey working with the Armenians (e.g. The Hubbards of Sivas by Edwin W. Martin, 1991; Triumph from Tragedy by Araxi Palmer, 1997; Ringing the Gotchnag 1855-1922 by Jonathan Conant Page, 2009). The volume is also of considerable interest because it includes some of what transpired on the local scene in Sivas under cover of World War I in Ottoman Turkey at the time of horrors that have come to be called the genocide against the Armenians by the Young Turk regime. It covers service during and afterwards during the period of reconstruction dealing especially with orphans and fund raising back home in America. Ms. Partridge has prepared a text that includes not only available diary entries which are more than key components of a family history but has facilitated comparison of daily events in America and in Turkey and Armenia. By reading the entries, especially those that focus on critical years of service by this remarkable family one can get a very good impression of what was happening and what the needs were. In some places, despite the horrendous events that were happening, one gets the feeling of considerable stoicism and a simple recognition that one must get on with work and service as best one could. There was no time to lament when there was so much to do. The Partridges and Mary Graffam were people who would nowadays be referred to as people with a 'social conscience.' They were not just missionaries, they were to me, primarily educators who dedicated themselves first and foremost to teaching pursuits among the Armenians in Sivas region of Turkey-in-Asia. For those of Armenian heritage who wish to have a fresh context for various snippets of family memory that they may have or may have heard about or come to know about through family histories cannot help but gain a deeper understanding of what Ms. Partridge refers to as the 'humanitarian gene' that ran deep in the persona of those that served and continue to serve even today. Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
