Title: Human Nature in Its Four-Fold State Author: Thomas Boston Publisher: Edinburgh Date: 1720 Edition: First Edition Binding: Contemporary leather Condition: Fair Description: Edinburgh, 1720. First edition of Thomas Boston’s influential theological work Human Nature in Its Four-Fold State, first published in this year and subsequently issued in numerous editions. ERA Contemporary full leather binding, now heavily worn. Both boards are present, with extensive rubbing, scuffing, surface loss and wear to the corners and edges. The spine is substantially deteriorated with considerable loss of the original leather, exposing areas of the underlying structure. There is evidence of an older repair or reinforcement to the spine and adjoining area of the front board. The hinges and board attachments are consequently fragile and should be handled with care. The front pastedown carries an early printed advertisement together with several old manuscript inscriptions and calculations. Considerable age-toning, staining and general handling wear are present, as expected in a volume more than three centuries old. Importantly, all 614 numbered pages are present. The text block is complete and the printed text remains entirely legible throughout. Pages show age-related browning, edge wear, occasional creasing and other signs of long use, but the book remains a substantially complete surviving copy. Despite its distressed binding, this is a scarce and historically significant copy of the first edition of one of Thomas Boston’s best-known works, retaining all boards and the complete text. Condition: Fair. Complete copy with all 614 pages present and fully legible. Contemporary leather binding very heavily worn, with extensive surface loss, rubbing and edge wear. Significant loss to spine covering with evidence of old repair/reinforcement; boards present but fragile. Internally age-toned and marked with early inscriptions, but text block complete. Sold primarily for its scarcity and significance as a 1720 first edition. …
