What is an IDEA 2004 Update Edition? Human Exceptionality has been updated to reflect this long-anticipated legislation in two ways:
- Relevant discussion throughout the book has been revised to reflect IDEA ‘04. These revisions have been made while still preserving the original pagination of the text, so no changes to lecture notes or reading assignments are necessary, and all supplementary materials (and page references therein) remain accurate. An “IDEA 2004” icon appears in the margins adjacent to the updates.
- A Guide to IDEA 2004 has been included as an appendix in the Update Edition. This clear, comprehensive, jargon-free appendix gives a brief side-by-side comparison of IDEA ’04 versus the previous ’97 legislation for each of the statutes, and, when a little friendly “background” would help the reader better understand the practical implications of the law, an additional note is provided.
The Eighth Edition of Human Exceptionality continues to provide a complete, accessible introduction to teaching, interacting, and living with individuals with exceptionalities across the lifespan, with an increased attention to "teaching."
After a detailed introduction to the foundations of exceptionality, featuring completely revised and expanded chapters about exceptionality and education, the second half of Human Exceptionality focuses on definitions, classifications, prevalence, causation, and characteristics for the major categories of exceptionality. The discussion of each category concludes with practical educational, medical, and social services aspects of working with people with exceptionalities. Up-to-date research informs discussions that are intelligent and interesting. Detailed, personal stories about people with exceptionalities, along with features that help students study and apply material in each chapter, create this book's unique human approach.
This text is appropriate for preservice and practicing teachers interested in additional certification, as well as anyone planning to work with persons with exceptionalities in other human services contexts, such as psychology, social work, allied health, and counseling.

From the Back Cover
Hardman/Drew/Egan, Human Exceptionality: School, Community, and Family takes a unique human approach. From detailed, personal stories about people with exceptionalities, to narratives about the people who work with those with exceptionalities, this book helps your students to see past an individual's disability and to see the person first.
With an enhanced emphasis on the educational and classroom implications for students with exceptionalities, the eighth edition retains its excellent treatment of exceptional individuals within the community and family.
“This has always been my favorite text and the only one I've ever used. . . . You've done a wonderful job!”
Mark O'Dekirk, Meredith College
“The information presented in the Hardman text is well organized and is an excellent source for students to use for review and reference.”
William Drakeford, University of Maryland
“There is a nice spirit of fun in this book. In addition to the specific content we must share with learners, we must also share our joy of the work which we do.”
Dan Baker, University of Oregon

Store description
With 3 stores less than 1 hour outside the DC/Metropolitan area (1 in Gaithersburg, 1 in Frederick and 1 in Hagerstown, MD), we have the largest selection of books in the tri-state area. Wonder Book and Video has been in business since 1980 and online since 1997. We have over 1 Million books for sale on our website and another 1 Million books for sale in our 3 locations. Items on Abe are not necessarily in stock at our retail locations. Please do not call the stores to place orders for Abe Books sales. We have a very active online inventory and as such, we can receive multiple orders for the same item. We fill those orders on a first come first serve basis, but will refund promptly any items that are out of stock. Since 1980 it has always been about the books. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children's paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost "in the stacks" for as long as they wish. In 2002 USAToday recognized us as "1 of 10 Great Old Bookstores", and we have been featured in numerous other newspaper and TV stories including Washington Post and CSpan. Members ABAA, ILAB.…
