Embossed leather covers with gilt title and bands on spine; vi, [7] - 312 pp; engraved title page and frontis engraved by J. B. Neagle after R. Smirke; annotations; index. Measures 5 5/8 inches high. Long heroic narrative poem by Samuel Butler (1612-1680) based on the English Civil War in the 17th century. With it's satirical and Anti-Puritan content, this work is a classic and has been reprinted many times in various editions, this one being an American printing. Chipping at top and bottom of headband; some splitting along the spine; light foxing; leather covers show edge and corner wear; still in overall VG condition with a tight text block. [21-437].
