Neuware - Portugal, 1808. Beneath the splendour of Lisbon's Corpus Christi procession, resistance to French occupation is approaching its breaking point. Conspirators gather, police agents listen at doors, armies move toward the coast, and private loyalties become as dangerous as public rebellion. Armand d'Aubry is a French officer divided between military honour and his love for the Portuguese Leonor. Manuel Coutinho, his rival and adversary, serves a country struggling to recover its freedom. As Junot's regime weakens and British forces land in Portugal, the destinies of soldiers, patriots, families, and informers converge at the Battle of Vimeiro. Luiz Augusto Rebello da Silva combines historical reconstruction, political satire, Gothic atmosphere, romance, and battlefield drama in the second and final volume of The House of Ghosts.
