About the book >.>.> A House in the City: A Study of the City and of the Stock Exchange Based on the Records of Foster and Braithwaite, 1825-1975 by William Joseph Reader provides an in-depth examination of the Stock Exchange and the evolution of its reputation, particularly through the lens of the firm Foster & Braithwaite. Established in 1825, this firm emerged during a period of significant economic growth in Victorian Britain, capitalising on the burgeoning railway sector and becoming one of the early brokers to introduce American railway securities to the London market. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of a sector often perceived as akin to a betting shop, a sentiment Foster & Braithwaite sought to challenge. The book delves into the Quaker roots of the firm?s partners, whose interconnections through religion, family ties, and business ventures offered substantial influence in banking throughout the 19th century, notably with the Lloyds. Reader narrates how Sir John Braithwaite, who served as Chairman of The Stock Exchange from 1949 to 1959, aimed to reform the Stock Exchange?s reputation from one of irresponsible gambling to a vital component of the modern mixed economy, highlighting its role in managing established securities and facilitating new financial ventures. What sets this study apart is its reliance on the extensive archives of Foster & Braithwaite, which chronicle the firm's operations from its inception to the contemporary era. This unique access allows for a nuanced portrayal of the Stock Exchange, providing a private perspective on an institution that plays a pivotal role in public finance and economic development. Through these records, readers gain insight into the challenges and transformations within the financial landscape over a crucial century. (LL).…
