Item description from seller

THE COMPETING PLANS THAT HELPED SHAPE JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL. An important early American work on hospital architecture and administration, commissioned for the trustees charged with establishing the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Five physicians-John Shaw Billings, Norton Folsom, Joseph Jones, Caspar Morris, and Stephen Smith-were invited to present their recommendations for the construction, organization, and management of the proposed institution. Their essays address hospital layout, wards, ventilation, sanitation, operating facilities, autopsy rooms, patient accommodation, administration, and other practical problems of nineteenth-century hospital design, accompanied by extensive architectural plans. The resulting volume became part of the intellectual and architectural foundation from which Johns Hopkins Hospital was developed. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: FIVE ESSAYS WITH EXTENSIVE ARCHITECTURAL PLANS. +++ Original green cloth over boards, ruled in blind, with gilt spine lettering. Octavo; 9.5 inches; xxi, 353 pages. +++ Essays on hospital construction and organization by John S. Billings, Norton Folsom, Joseph Jones, Caspar Morris, and Stephen Smith. Preliminary material includes the names of the Johns Hopkins Hospital trustees, the trustees' advertisement and letter to the contributors, Johns Hopkins's letter to the trustees, and extracts from his will. +++ Illustrated with numerous architectural plans, elevations, sections, and folding plates presenting proposed hospital arrangements, including wards, isolation facilities, autopsy buildings, operating spaces, ventilation systems, and related institutional structures. CONDITION: POOR BINDING; COMPLETE TEXT AND ARCHITECTURAL MATERIAL - Interior Good +++ Original green cloth heavily worn and distressed, with extensive mottling, staining, discoloration, surface abrasion, spotting, and loss of cloth exposing the underlying boards along portions of the edges and corners. Spine similarly mottled and worn, though gilt title remains legible. Corners bumped and rounded; spine ends worn. +++ Front and rear hinges weakened, with visible separation beginning internally, but boards remain attached. Text block remains serviceable. Pages show scattered foxing, toning, handling, and occasional staining. Folding architectural plans show expected folds, some edge toning and handling, but remain present and usable. +++ Complete despite the substantially deteriorated binding. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: DESIGNING THE JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL. Published before construction of Johns Hopkins Hospital, these five proposals document a formative moment in American hospital design, when physicians and administrators were reconsidering the relationship among architecture, ventilation, sanitation, infection, patient separation, clinical work, and institutional management. John Shaw Billings became particularly influential in the eventual planning of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Modern scholarship identifies the hospital as an important experiment in environmental and medical architecture, while Garrison-Morton records these essays as influential upon both the eventual Johns Hopkins Hospital and hospitals that followed. The plans retain research importance beyond the history of Johns Hopkins itself. The Johns Hopkins Medical Archives, for example, specifically directs researchers to this volume for J. R. Niernsee's original plans relating to the Colored Orphan Asylum. SUBJECTS: Johns Hopkins Hospital, John Shaw Billings, Hospital Design, Hospital Construction, Hospital Administration, Hospital Planning, Nineteenth-Century Medicine, Medical Architecture, Public Health, Sanitation, Ventilation, Hospital Wards, Baltimore Medical History, Johns Hopkins, Healthcare Architecture, Medical History, Architectural History, Hospital Architecture, Institutional History.…
