The patient is unstable. The diagnosis is unclear. What should you do first?
That is the reality of hospital medicine.
Patients rarely arrive with one simple problem. You may be dealing with several conditions at once, changing vital signs, abnormal labs, competing priorities, and limited time to decide what matters most.
You may know the medicine—but still wonder:
What should I prioritize? What am I missing? When should I escalate?
The problem is not that you need to memorize more. You need a clear way to put clinical information together.
Hospital Medicine Principles & Practices 2026–2027 focuses on the practical thinking behind inpatient care: how to assess the patient, identify priorities, build a differential, choose the next step, treat safely, and reassess when the situation changes.
Inside, You’ll Learn How To:-
Approach new admissions with a clear, systematic process
-
Build and narrow differentials for common inpatient presentations
-
Interpret vital signs, laboratory results, imaging, and clinical trends together
-
Recognize deterioration and determine when to escalate care
-
Work through acute and complex medical problems step by step
-
Manage competing problems without losing sight of the immediate priority
-
Apply practical approaches to fluids, electrolytes, acid-base disorders, infections, medications, and supportive care
-
Think through cardiovascular, respiratory, neurologic, renal, metabolic, and other common hospital problems
-
Make safer decisions about monitoring, consultation, and level of care
-
Improve medication reconciliation, handoffs, discharge planning, and transitions of care
-
Apply patient-safety and high-value-care principles to everyday practice
Consider a patient who suddenly becomes short of breath.
Instead of reacting to one abnormal finding, you learn to work through the problem:
What is immediately dangerous?
What information will change management?
What should happen now?
How will I know whether the treatment worked?
This approach can be applied throughout the hospital—from admission and daily management to deterioration, escalation, and discharge.
Clear. Practical. Clinically Focused. No unnecessary jargon.
No endless lists without context.
No complicated explanations that leave you wondering what to do next.
The goal is simple: help you turn medical knowledge into organized clinical action.
From Uncertain to OrganizedFrom:
“I know the information, but I don't know how to prioritize it.”
To:
“I can assess the patient, identify what matters most, choose the next step, and recognize when the plan needs to change.”
Who Is This For?Designed for hospitalists, internal medicine physicians, residents, medical students, advanced practice providers, and clinicians who want a practical approach to inpatient care.
Whether you are beginning hospital medicine, strengthening your clinical reasoning, or reviewing for examinations, this book gives you a structured way to approach the hospitalized patient.
Because hospital medicine is not simply about knowing what a disease is.
It is about knowing what to do next.
Start building a clearer, more systematic approach to inpatient care with Hospital Medicine Principles & Practices 2026–2027.
