Item description from seller

SUBTITLED : `Being the Life and Opinions of a Young and Impertinent Criminal Recounted by Himself '. 179 pages - UNillustrated - plus book adverts. The author takes a detached look at his hero Young Alf, as a representative of the life and lore of gangland London in the 1890s. The work purports to be reporting but critics argue a measure of creative fiction. Plenty of petty crime - see e.g. the mugging of the French restauranteur on page 69. READ more about : Denmark Hill, Billy the Snide, Vauxhall Street, Lambeth Walk, kip, beano, dust-cart, toff and swag. Cond ; Paper wrapper is white with white (and black) lettering. No names, marks, nor tears. Quote (p.168) : " ` Well, next mornin', Alice's eyes was stannin' out proper wiv the smack I'd give 'er. An' soon as 'er muvver see 'er, she fort of 'ow she'd landed Alice the night 'fore, an nuffink'd do for her but she must ._._._.' ." Size: 12mo.
