[Hong Kong] [Radical Activism] [Anti China Zines] Hong Kong's largest demonstrations against extradition to China protest zine archive. A powerful and visually arresting archive of 5 protest zines published at the height of the 2019 Hong Kong demonstrations created by USC students Rebecca Zhang and Natalie Ng with close personal ties to Hong Kong. Each staple-bound zine combines evocative and graphic photography, protest slogans, social media discourse, and excerpts from international news outlets to capture the unfolding political crisis surrounding the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (ELAB). The zines are bilingual in English and Chinese though primarily in English and serve as both grassroots documentation and defiant political statement. The former British colony was returned to Chinese sovereignty in 1997. Protests were sparked by a proposal by the new authorities to amend extradition laws and allow suspects to be transferred to mainland China for trial, these attempt by Beijing to has been met with protest. Titles include the following: [1] This is Hong Kong, Not China / Not Yet (June 17, 2019) Published just days after nearly one million demonstrators flooded the streets to protest a bill allowing extradition to mainland China. Imagery shows the hundreds of thousands of protesters outside of the key streets around government headquarters in central HK. [2] Stand With Hong Kong (July 12, 2019) Stand With Hong Kong highlights the evolution of the movement's decentralized tactics, quoting protesters and media figures. One powerful photo shows part of the crowd of 8,000 mothers who attended a rally in Chater Garden, lifting up the voices of the disenfranchised youth. [3] No Rioters, Only Tyranny: Hong Kong on the Edge (August 5, 2019). Reflecting a darker turn in the movement, documenting escalating clashes with police and the Hong Kong government's refusal to meet protester demands. This zine includes direct citations from The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Guardian, offering a globally-situated narrative. [4] Be Water, My Friend (August 26, 2019) Exploring the psychological and philosophical framework adopted by protesters to adapt under intense surveillance and violence. "Be Water" philosophy-an homage to Bruce Lee urging fluid, leaderless resistance. The five core demands of the movement are clearly articulated in this issue, including universal suffrage and police accountability. [5] Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times (September 12, 2019). Documenting the rise in violence against protesters by the police two months after primarily peaceful protests. Raw and graphic imagery seeks to expose the tyranny placed by the government and compares the crowd of 200,000 linking hands to form the "Hong Kong Way" to that of the Baltic Way against the Soviet Union. Condition overall is near fine, with slight corner wear to a few volumes, Stand with Hong Kong has some markings and creasing to front cover. At the time, Hong Kong was the only place on Chinese soil that had an annual ceremony to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre, when Chinese tanks rolled into central Beijing to crush a student led protest calling for political change. These rare protest zines are a poignant, self-published chronicle of a youth-led movement that became one of the most visible pro-democracy uprisings in recent history. On 30 June 2020, China implemented "Hong Kong national security law". Its 66 articles target crimes of secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces, and includes serious penalties between 10 years of prison to life imprisonmentAs official Chinese censorship sought to erase documentation of the unrest, these underground zines remain a vital form of resistance and memory.
