When your child comes home from school in tears for the third time this month, you may find yourself typing “Is homeschooling right for us?” into a search bar at midnight.
And then the noise begins.
Advocacy sites promise academic success and thriving children. Critics warn about isolation, lost opportunities, and children falling through the cracks. Both sides can point to studies. Neither side gives you the whole picture.
You don't need a cheerleader. You don't need a doomsayer. You need to know what the evidence actually says.
Homeschooling: What Actually Works is a clear-eyed, research-grounded guide to one of the most consequential education decisions a parent can make.
It examines the evidence behind the biggest questions parents ask:
-
Do homeschooled children actually perform better academically—or do selection effects explain much of the apparent advantage?
-
What does the research really tell us about socialization?
-
What do we know about safety, abuse, and children's vulnerability outside traditional school settings?
-
Which children and families are most likely to thrive with homeschooling?
-
What are the risks of parental burnout, isolation, and losing your sense of identity?
-
What does homeschooling actually cost—in money, time, and career opportunities?
-
What legal requirements apply in your state, and what could you be overlooking?
-
What happens if homeschooling isn't working and you decide to stop?
Rather than cherry-picking studies to support a predetermined conclusion, this book looks at the strengths, limitations, contradictions, and gaps in the available evidence—including the uncomfortable findings that both advocates and critics sometimes leave out.
You'll also get the practical side of the decision: state-by-state legal considerations, financial and logistical realities, the demands homeschooling places on parents, and the challenges that tend to appear after the initial excitement wears off.
This book won't tell you whether you should homeschool.
It will help you determine whether homeschooling is likely to work for your particular child, your particular family, and your particular circumstances.
Because the goal isn't to choose the side with the best argument.
It's to make the best decision with the evidence available—rather than letting fear, hope, or someone else's agenda make it for you.
