From the Preface: "I hope it will be understood that I do not write my autobiography in the spirit of one who has lived a life so remarkable that it needs to have a book written about it, at least any more so than the next person's; my most remarkable feat is supporting a family, which lots of other people somewhat to my amazement- have done. From my point of view, the remarkable thing about Floyd Dell is that he actually could do, and finally did do, most of the things that other people do. This will be the story of, first, how he got into that fix of not getting the ordinary satisfactions out of life getting instead some valuable artistic and intellectual satisfactions; and then the story of how he triumphantly got most of the commonplace everyday satisfactions, without surrendering all the others though some of them had to go by the board in the process.".
