'Very little contemporary secondary material on Brewster exists, nor is he adequately treated in the standard histories of optics. The only biography that exists is The Home Life. While it is generally reliable, it is frankly addressed to the 'unscientific' reader . There is no collected edition of Brewster's works, nor is there a bibliography. An appendix in The Home Life reproduces the bibliography of his articles in the Royal Society's Catalogue of Scientific Papers' (D.S.B. II: 453-4). The First Edition contained only 440 pages.
