xi, 9-384 p. 19 cm. Hardcover with worn boards, especially chipped upper spine. Some paper stuck to outsides. Paper browned, bottom corners worn, spotting, chipped top corner p. 303, tiny holes in top corners pp. 305, 309 and in front pastedown. Includes essays on the merits of good housekeeping ("Success in housekeeping adds credit to the woman of intellect" - p. 9), table manners ("manners were made for men, not men for manners" - p. 19), dinner etiquette ("Invitations are always sent to persons in the same town by private messenger" - p. 25), social observances ("The lady of the house rises to receive any guest, unless it be a very young one" - p. 32), training of young girls, etc. Besides recipes, there are instructions for preparing cough mixture, family soap, colouring cotton carpet bags, preventing red ants, and a special section for the sick room.
