Phelps -- Boston, Dear Brother, Will you please publish the enclosed and thus warn the brethren against a villain to base to live and yet not ready to die. Very truly yours, Lewis Tappan." Tappan's villain too base to live but not yet ready to die was surely slavery. We believe that this note probably accompanied the manuscript for Tappan's "Address to the Non-Slaveholders of the South: on the Social and Political Evils of Slavery," which was published by the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society in 1843. Tappan was one of the founders of that organization in 1840 after he and several others abandoned the American Anti-Slavery Society (AASS), partly because the AASS decided to permit women to more fully participate in that organization. Phelps, 1805-1847, was also a white abolitionist and involved with the American and Foriegn Anti-Slavery Society. He appears to have been involved with their publications.
