Add to basketShe saw her first at a gala-tall, watchful, still in the particular way of someone who had already assessed every room they'd ever walked into and found it acceptable. They spoke for fifteen minutes. Then Camille Reyes turned to get a drink, and the woman in the black jacket was gone.
Six months later, Camille is deep in the most important case of her career: a landmark civil harassment trial on behalf of a tenant systematically driven from her home by a powerful real estate firm. Camille has spent eleven years building her practice on preparation, precision, and the controlled aggression that wins on procedural points-but this case is personal in a way she doesn't entirely let herself name. When threatening messages begin arriving with details that couldn't be public-her exact schedule, her private meetings, her internal calendar-she finds herself assigned a security detail through Silverpoint, the firm her building retained.
The detail is Dani Park.
It is, of course, the woman from the gala.
What follows is six weeks of close proximity and careful distance: Dani sleeping in the guest room, driving Camille to court, standing in office doorways at exactly the right moment-steady, watchful, and professionally immovable. Camille, who has spent her career deploying warmth and wit as instruments of precision, finds every approach she makes received and set aside with a courteous clarity that is nothing like rejection. And Dani, who has spent her whole life leaving before anything can cost her something, writes her way around the truth in a bullet journal and crosses it out and writes it again.
The trial builds. The threat escalates. And in the space of six weeks-granola bars left on desks, noodle orders remembered without announcement, a Sunday spent rebuilding a closing argument from the correct foundation-two carefully self-contained women begin to understand that the walls they've built are not the same as safety.
Hold the Line is a slow-burn romance about the courage it takes to stop performing, the difference between being alone and being lonely, and what it means to let someone in when you've spent years being very good at not needing to.
