2 volumes. Bound in publisher's cloth. Hardcover. Chipping, with loss to spine cloth of v.1. xxx + 527p.; xix + 547p. Frontispiece & title of v.1 sprung. Reprint of the 1847 ed. Contemporary gift inscription to William V. Clay, from his father, 1863. Civil war provenance: Pvt. William Vaux Clay (1844 - 1864) served in the 7th Pennsylvania (1862) Militia from Sept 12-26, 1862 and the 32nd Pennsylvania Emergency Troops Private in Company A. The Pennsylvania Emergency Troops were called up to repulse the Confederate invasion of Pennsylvania. William died from field disease he contracted while serving in the army in 1864. His father, Joseph Ashmead Clay was a prominent Philadelphia Attorney. He was the grandson of US Congressman Joseph Clay. His brother Cecil Clay (1842-1907) was a Major, 58th Pennsylvania Infantry, Brevet Brigadier General.
