History of the Rise and Progress of the Arts of Design in the United States. By William Dunlap and printed in New York City by George P. Scott & Co. 1834, 435 and 480 pp, 9.25 x 6 , 8vo, hardcover 3/4 leather. As-is, with front board of Volume II detached. Cracking and looseness to both rear boards. Rubbing and wear to spine, along with loss of labels. Text blocks remain bound well with minor wear. Light markings and marginalia, primarily at fronts of volumes. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. Includes custom book slips, with superficial rubbing from leather inside and outside both. A scarce 1st edition of the most notable work of William Dunlap (1766-1839), an early American theater pioneer. Dunlap examines the early history of American art, including prior to the Revolution.
