Second edition. Original dark blue cloth with very slight edgewear, bright gilt figures of Cyrus the Great and Shah Abbas the Great on the two volumes. Bright gilt titles on the unfaded spines, and top edges gilt. Large octavo volumes, with 561 and 594 pages. 2 frontispieces, 92 plates and illustrations, and 6 maps including 2 large folding in pockets at end. Very good condition, fresh and clean, with only very slight rubbing to the boards. The maps are in excellent condition. A splendid set. Sykes (1867-1945) was an English soldier, diplomat and scholar who travelled and fought in and around Persia for over two decades. Posted with the British army to India, he made several journeys through Persia and Baluchistan (present day Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan). In 1902 he detailed these travels in Ten Thousand Miles in Persia, and was awarded the Royal geographical Society's Gold Medal. Over the next few years he made extensive journeys in the Middle East and was appointed consul-general for Khuzustan. Toward the end of World War I, he was sent to raise a Persian force to counter the strong German influence in most of South Persia. His forces supported the Russians against the Turks. Sykes's magnificent History of Persia includes a good deal on modern Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan. It provides a history of Persia from the earliest times to1906, and probably constitutes one of the best histories of the country available in any language other than Persian. The second edition, offered here, is almost as scarce as the first.…
