Item description from seller

A smart copy of this fictional account of the mutinies at Spithead and the Nore, from William Johnson Neale. A fictionalised account of two important mutinies for the British Royal Navy. The Spithead and Nore mutinies were major mutinies by sailors of the Royal Navy in 1797, the first in an increasing series of outbreaks of maritime radicalism in the Atlantic World. The actions of these sailors were extremely concerning for Britain as the country was at war with Revolutionary France, and the Navy was the main component of the war effort. Written by William Johnson Neale, also known as William Johnstoun Nelson Neale, an English barrister and novelist. In 1824 he entered the Royal Navy and fought in the Battle of Navarino on board HMS Talbot. Lacking the portrait frontispiece. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities, with the odd small mark to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and the odd pencil mark or annotation. A contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper with the bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Very Good.…
