Discover the history of Monroe County as it grew from frontier settlements to a bustling Michigan region.
This volume weaves a vivid narrative of people, places, and principal interests, offering a grounded look at how communities formed, prospered, and adapted over time. From early nicknames and river mills to notable local figures, the book blends local lore with surrounding events to illuminate the county’s development.
Two engaging sections frame the story: a detailed account of towns, post offices, and population shifts; and an expansive geology chapter that tracks the land, its resources, and the science behind Monroe’s rocks and quarries. Richly described anecdotes—such as rival towns, ambitious projects, and the people who built them—bring the county to life while staying rooted in documented history.- Learn how communities like New Dublin and Brest emerged, and how geography shaped their fortunes.
- Explore population trends across townships and the city, with snapshots of municipal and postal history.
- Read about local industries, from mills to quarries, and the people who managed them.
- Get a window into the science of the region, including prehistoric reminders and the study of local limestones.
