Print on Demand. This book explores the history of the Jewish people during the period from Antiochus IV Epiphanes to the reign of Hadrian, setting Jewish history within its wider context of both Jewish and Hellenistic history. The author examines the rise of the Maccabees, their independence, the Roman conquest, Herod the Great, and the period leading up to the Hadrianic War. The book also explores the religious, cultural, and intellectual world of the Maccabean and Herodian periods, and gives a full account of the development of the internal structure of the state and the history of the Sanhedrin and high-priesthood. The author considers that despite the Maccabees’ attempts to return to the ways of their fathers, the culture of the Diaspora, and the political and social realities of the time meant that Hellenistic culture would continue to have a powerful influence on Jewish culture and identity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Ancient World History
This volume surveys the history of the Jewish people from the Maccabean era through the Hadrianic period, focusing on how political events and religious ideas intersected in daily life. It frames the period with attention to the rise of Pharisaism, the role of the scribes, and the shift from temple-centered authority to a community-based, law-focused Judaism. The aim is to illuminate the context in which Christian origins emerged, without assuming prior specialized knowledge.
The introduction explains the book’s scope and method, outlining two main threads: political history and inner life, including how institutions like the Sanhedrim, priesthood, and schools shaped the era. It discusses the sources available to researchers and why understanding this history matters for interpreting early Christian history.
- How the Pharisaic movement grew from earlier reforms and what it meant for daily life and law.
- The Maccabean period and its impact on Jewish independence and religious identity.
- How political changes interacted with religious movements, including the shift under Roman rule.
- Key institutions and groups, such as scribes, the Sanhedrim, the temple, and the Essenes, and their influence on culture and thought.
Ideal for readers of biblical history, religious studies, and classical history who want a careful, source-grounded view of the era that precedes and helps explain early Christianity.
