History, Topography, and Directory of Furness & Cartmel, J. Bulmer (Ed.) â" 2nd Edition Publication: Preston, T. Snape & Co. for T. Bulmer & Co., n.d. [c. 1911] Formatting: 8vo, pp. viii, 423, vi. Condition Report: Good. Handsomely rebound in modern light brown cloth with bright gilt lettering to the spine, the boards are practically pristine, boasting sharp corners, a tight spine, and a complete absence of shelf-wear. The modern creamy endpapers are immaculate and perfectly secure the text block. Internally, the pages exhibit light, uniform age-toning and minor handling wear expected of a heavily referenced work. As an ex-library copy, the volume bears several institutional ink and blind stamps, including those from Rawtenstall and Lancaster libraries, alongside handwritten accession numbers. Despite these markings, the text remains entirely bright, crisp, and highly legible, making this a structurally excellent working copy. Catalogue Note: This is the Second Edition of Bulmerâs celebrated regional directory. Notably, this copy bears substantial institutional provenance, carrying various stamps from the Borough of Rawtenstall Public Library and the Lancaster Reference Library, including ink stamps, blind stamps, and cataloguing numbers on the title page and preliminary leaves. While ex-library copies are a standard occurrence for heavily referenced historical directories of this nature, this volume has been thoughtfully rescued and re-backed in a durable, attractive modern cloth binding, ensuring its structural integrity for generations of continued research. Due to their practical utility, early editions of Bulmer's directories are increasingly uncommon on the open market in intact, useable condition. An indispensable resource for local historians and genealogists, this comprehensive directory offers a captivating snapshot of early twentieth-century life across the Furness and Cartmel peninsulas. Brimming with rich topographical, historical, and archaeological observations, the volume meticulously catalogues the towns, parishes, and manors of the region, preserving the area's significant industrial and familial heritage.…
