xviii, 218, [4] pages. Fold-out Chronology as frontispiece. Maps (with color). References. Appendix. Previous owner's note on fep. Pencil marks in margins and to text noted. This is one of The Historical Series for Bible Students. "A History of the Hebrew People from the Division of the Kingdom to the Fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C." is a classic historical and biblical study written by biblical scholar Charles Foster Kent. It details the split of the United Monarchy into the northern Kingdom of Israel and southern Kingdom of Judah, their political and religious struggles under the pressures of the Assyrian and Babylonian empires, and the ultimate destruction of Jerusalem. Charles Foster Kent (August 13, 1867 - May 2, 1925) was a prominent American Old Testament scholar, historian, and educator. He spent the majority of his career working to bridge the gap between rigorous academic biblical criticism and the general public. Kent was educated at Yale (A.B., 1889; Ph.D., 1891). He studied at the University of Berlin (1891-92). He was an instructor at the University of Chicago 1893-95 and then professor of Biblical literature at Brown. After 1901, he was Woolsey Professor of Biblical Literature at Yale. Kent was the founding president of the American Academy of Religion from 1910 to 1925. In 1922, he helped found the National Council of Schools of Religion, an organization that would later become the National Council on Religion in Higher Education, which played a significant role in church-university activities. In the early 1960s it became the Society for Religion in Higher Education. "A History of the Hebrew People" provides a detailed and scholarly examination of the political, social, and religious evolution of the Israelite nation. Written by Charles Foster Kent, a distinguished professor of biblical literature, this comprehensive work spans the formative years of the Hebrew people, from their earliest origins through the establishment and subsequent division of the monarchy. Kent masterfully reconstructs the historical landscape of the Ancient Near East, offering a clear narrative of the settlement in Canaan, the legendary reigns of Saul, David, and Solomon, and the complex cultural shifts that defined the era. The text focuses on the intersection of history and faith, analyzing how external political pressures and internal religious movements shaped the character of the Jewish people. By synthesizing biblical records with the historical and archaeological knowledge of his time, Kent delivers a narrative that is both academic and accessible. This work remains a significant contribution to biblical studies and ancient history, providing essential context for anyone seeking to understand the foundations of Western religious thought and the enduring legacy of the Hebrew civilization.
