Later edition. 12mo. Stitched as issued in the original printed publisher's wrappers, lightly rubbed with contemporary inscription of "Marianne Jones, Janry 1848" to ffep. London, The Religious Tract Society, c. "The following 'History of a Heart' was written by a Jewess, in America. An esteemed clergyman from thence, who has lately visited England, says he is personally acquainted with the writer, and adds, 'I know the statements which she makes, respecting her conversion to Christianity, to be correct.'" (Preface). The History of a Heart was first published in Philadelphia by Stavely and M'Calla in 1845, and in it Mordecai describes her scepticism, doubts and ultimately her conversion from Judaism to Christianity. The Religious Tract Society naturally picked it up to republish in the UK, though it has been significantly abridged to conform to their 36pp. booklet format. Ellen Mordecai (1790-1884) was the daughter of Jacob Mordecai, of North Carolina and later Richmond Virginia. Like her sister Rachel, Ellen spent her early childhood at her aunt's in Richmond, where she received her education. Her father had started the Female Academy at Warrenton, and its continued expansion required more assistance with the teaching, and by 1809 both Ellen and Caroline Mordecai began to assist their father in the operation of the school. Like their brother, after the family moved to Richmond, she continued teaching there, instructing her younger half-sisters and also later several of her nieces and nephews. The Mordecais had a long correspondence with the Irish Maria Edgeworth; more particularly Ellen's sister Maria wrote to Edgworth objecting to what she saw as uncomplimentary portrayals of the Jews her works. This in turn led to a sustained correspondence and friendship between the Edgworth and Mordecai families. Ellen was a minor figure in this exchange; however, the influence of Maria Edgworth may have led in some way to her conversion to Christianity. Apparently, Ellen relates: "I did not believe in the miracles of the Old Testament, because I could not feel satisfied that the miracles wrought at one time and accredited, should be rejected at another: and if the New Testament were false, so must be the Old; consequently I rejected both." She was influenced by an Episcopal Church at Petersburg where she lived, and by making concerted study of various texts; for "At the time I said, if I found that Christianity was true, which I did not expect, I should of course adopt it as my religion." She knew that her course of conversion would be rejected by her family, but followed through in May of 1837. OCLC records two copies only: BL and Florida.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Maggs Bros. Ltd ABA, ILAB, PBFA, London, United Kingdom, +44 (0)207 493 7160, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:

The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
