BOOK IS IN VERY GOOD+/NEAR FINE CONDITION WITH BEAUTIFUL BRIGHT GILT PICTORIAL COVER AND SPINE WITH TITLE TO BOTH. SOME LIGHT RUBBING TO CORNERS AND SPINE ENDS (SEE PHOTOS). BINDING AND HINGES ARE VERY GOOD, FRONT INSIDE HINGE REINFORCED WITH JAPANESE TISSUE (SEE PHOTO), NO LOOSE OR MISSING PAGES, PAGES ARE REMARKABLY BRIGHT AND CLEAN, WITHOUT MARKS AND NO FOXING. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Salesman's Sample. Dark blue cloth, lettered/illus. in gilt and black, bevelled edges. Salesman's sample, with two leather binding variants mounted inside front cover, cloth binding option mounted inside back cover. Front flyleaf toned and brittle, with several closed tears mended on verso with archival tape and two areas of loss. Former owner's address inscription on front blank following flyleaf, two entries written in rear order blanks. Hardback. No Dustjacket. Tight sound ex-library copy. Title page states 1889 and copyright page states 1888, with no other indication of later printings. Spine has been reinforced with black library tape. There are Library markings to the endpapers and the books edges. On the plus side, except for some very minor light pencil notation and bracketing to the interior text, which looks like it could be erased very easily, the interior pages are tight , sound and otherwise unmarked. The title page and copyright page are clean of any markings. If one rebound this book with new covers, endpapers, and trimmed the books edges, you would not have any library markings. Printed in New York City by Bryan, Taylor & Co. 1888, 702 pp, 10 x 7 , 8vo, hardcover blue cloth with gilt lettering. As-is, with rubbing and wear to boards and spine. Staining to back board. Front hinge almost completely split behind title page. Text block remains bound well beyond split at front. Some loss to tissue guard for frontispiece. Includes a wide array of black-and-white in-text illustrations and full-page plates, along with a double-page colored chart of insignias. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce piece on the Grand Army of the Republic, a Union veteran s organization founded in the years following the Civil War. The organization was at its peak at the time of the book s publication, and the GAR would hold annual encampments attended by tens of thousands of veterans each year. This is a solid copy of this superb and highly desirable work. Ornate binding. The author served in the 4th Mass Heavy Artillery. This copy has an inscription reading: "Aaron B. Parker Compliments of N.E. Ladd, Boston, Dec 25, 1899". (Major N.E. Ladd served with the 33rd and 55th Mass Inf and Aaron B. Parker). Good+ copy of the hard cover book.
