- Book 4 of 5: The History of Glaucoma
For more than 150 years, the central question in glaucoma has remained remarkably simple—and profoundly difficult to answer: What produces the characteristic optic neuropathy of glaucoma?
This volume explores the history and evolution of scientific thought surrounding the pathogenesis of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, tracing the debate from nineteenth-century mechanical theories centered on elevated intraocular pressure to modern concepts emphasizing vascular regulation, ocular perfusion, neurodegeneration, and the complex interplay of multiple pathogenic mechanisms.
Featuring an authoritative synthesis by Sohan Singh Hayreh—whose pioneering investigations fundamentally reshaped understanding of the optic nerve's vascular anatomy and blood supply—together with a comprehensive examination of glaucoma without elevated intraocular pressure by Russell Swan, Brandon Baartman, Michael Greenwood, and John Berdahl, this volume examines the evidence behind competing theories and the discoveries that continue to redefine glaucoma as more than simply a disease of elevated intraocular pressure.
By following the evolution of ideas from early speculation to modern evidence-based science, The History of Glaucoma: Part IV provides readers with a deeper understanding of one of ophthalmology's most enduring scientific challenges. Essential for glaucoma specialists, researchers, residents, and historians of medicine, this volume offers both a historical perspective and a thoughtful examination of the biological mechanisms that continue to shape the future of glaucoma research and patient care.
