Item description from seller

Containing the first printing of any part of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (which did not appear in the first edition). Four volumes, octavo. Complete with the engraved frontispiece of Thomas Warton. Publisher's blue-grey paper-covered boards with cloth spines and paper spine labels. Staining along spine edge indicates some type of repair to the spine, but no cloth added, not rebacked, recased or otherwise muddled by restoration. Paper worn from board edges and spine cloth chipped at extremities, but internal contents are generally attractive. Warton's The History of English Poetry, originally published between 1774 and 1781, was a valuable contribution to the academic study of early English verse, but it was this second edition, with editorial notes by Richard Price, that established its importance to Arthurian scholarship. This edition contains the first printing of any part of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which is preserved in the British Library's M.S. Cotton Nero A.x (the "Gawain manuscript") alongside Pearl, Cleanness, and Patience; Price also discusses the importance of Beowulf at length. Sir Gawain was not published in its entirety until it appeared in Frederic Madden's 1839 edition.…
