Item description from seller

FIRST EDITION, hole to A5 with the loss of a few words, but no loss of sense, otherwise internally clean and bright, pp. [32], 237, [1], 8vo, contemporary mottled calf, double blind fillet border, flat spine ruled blind, red speckled edges; spine and corners neatly restored, later spine label, small patch of contrasting leather at the foot of the upper hinge, leather beginning to pull away from text block; contemporary ownership inscription of Robert Michell (possibly M.P. for Petersfield, 1653-1729), good. First edition in English of this 'bold and scandalous forgery' (Ticknor). First published in Spanish as Verdadera Historia del Rey Don Rodrigo (1592), this narrative purports to be a chronicle of the Moorish conquest of Spain taken from a contemporary Arabic manuscript. It fooled various luminaries, including Robert Southey, but was definitively revealed as a fake and an original composition by its supposed 'translator' Miguel de Luna (1550-c.1615). It is nonetheless an evocative description of Al-Andalus, reflecting the Golden Age court's preoccupation with the Caliphate. See: Ticknor, Hist. Span. lit., (London, 1849) v. 1, p. 226 (fn.); E. Drayson, 'Miguel de Luna Hoaxer, Heretic or Hero?', The Lead Books of Granada. Early Modern History: Society and Culture (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013). (ESTC R1732; Palau 144 080; Wing L 3484A).…
