"The History of the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America" is a definitive and foundational account of one of the most significant institutions in African American religious life. Written by Bishop C. H. Phillips, a central figure in the church's leadership and development, this comprehensive volume chronicles the origins, growth, and organizational structure of the Colored Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church from its formal establishment in 1870 through the early 20th century.
The narrative explores the sociopolitical and spiritual climate of the post-Civil War era, detailing the church's separation from the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and its subsequent mission to provide spiritual guidance and education to newly emancipated African Americans. Phillips provides detailed records of General Conferences, the election of bishops, and the establishment of educational institutions that became pillars of the community.
As a firsthand witness and participant in many of the events described, Phillips offers an authoritative perspective on the trials and triumphs of the denomination. This work serves as an essential resource for scholars of African American history, theology, and the sociology of religion, documenting the resilience and agency of a people dedicated to building their own spiritual and social legacy in America.
