Print on Demand. This book offers a compelling analysis of the role Christianity played in preserving and developing human civilization during the tumultuous fifth century. The author argues that, contrary to the dominant view of the period as one of decline, the Christian Church emerged as a beacon of progress, fostering the preservation of knowledge, social institutions, and the arts. Through its influence, the seeds of modern European nations were sown, as the Church encouraged learning and fostered a sense of unity amidst the chaos of the time. The author explores the ways in which Christianity inspired the development of law, literature, and philosophy, highlighting the transformation of pagan beliefs and practices into a vibrant and enduring Christian culture. This book provides a fresh perspective on the often-overlooked contributions of Christianity to Western civilization, demonstrating its profound impact on the genesis of the modern world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The following version in English, of an historical work which is well known and valued in France, is offered to a public which has welcomed the kindred writings of the Comte de Montalembert. It treats of a period which was the turning point in the history of Western civilization, and although the standpoint of the author may to a certain extent influence the method of treatment, and cause many in this country to take exception to details, yet it is submitted that all will agree to its main argument, the position of the Chris tian Church as the great - the only civilizing force that survived the revolution which left the prostrate Empire face to face with the invading hordes. This fact, which is insisted on by the followers of Comte, will in these days surely not be controverted by any of those whose thought is governed by Christianity.
