Print on Demand. This book examines the historical record to challenge the widely held belief in a direct line of Roman Popes presiding over the Christian Church in its earliest years. Through a painstaking reassessment of existing primary sources and a review of the political and cultural context of the time, the author argues that many of the documents traditionally relied upon to establish this apostolic succession are, in fact, forgeries of a later date. This book questions the divine right of the Roman bishop to rule the Universal Church and presents a fresh perspective on the origins of Christianity, the nature of the Roman episcopate, and the evolution of ecclesiastical power. This insightful work will appeal to scholars, historians, and anyone interested in the early history of the Christian Church and the nature of religious authority. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The historian of the Church of Rome has no need to preface his labours by describing the city out of which that Church was gathered, and in which it professed to live a stranger. It will be enough for him to say that she was the queen of the cities of the ancient world, the mother of those legions, dreadful, terrible, and strong exceedingly, which had broken in pieces all the nations of the earth, and given her name to the world's empire. Seated on her seven hills, Rome beheld no rival.
